Collocato nelle Ande cilene a circa 3.000 m slm l\u2019ELT si suddivide in una struttura metallica rotante (Dome) dotata di aperture scorrevoli, con diametro di 92 m ed altezza di 80 m, all\u2019interno della quale sar\u00e0 posizionata la struttura metallica del telescopio, con diametro di 71 m e altezza di 62 m.
